In Grammar School students learn the basic facts. Each day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends just before 3:00 p.m.
Grammar school students have a fabulous ability to memorize, and so at Veritas Academy we train students by singing, chanting and memorizing all sorts of facts. They know that Constantinople fell in 1453, that Pharaoh Menes unified Upper and Lower Egypt and that the Avignon Schism was remedied by the Council of Constance. They also have a lot of fun dancing, singing and chanting while they are learning their Latin conjugations: “amo, amas, amat . . .” The morning for our grammar students begins with the Memory Period, a period of 2o minutes. It is a fun time of review for our students in 2nd through 6th grades. The students together sing and chant Latin declensions, history chronology, grammar structure, science facts and more. Parents and friends and the curious are always welcome to the Memory Period to experience the energy and love of learning.
Throughout Grammar School our students focus on learning Latin grammar. Their study of Latin begins in 2nd grade. This study prepares them to master English vocabulary (because so much of English vocabulary comes from Latin); it prepares them to master Greek (during the Dialectic years) and other foreign languages because all of the modern Romance languages are built on Latin; finally, the learning of Latin paradigms is an extremely profitable mental discipline that prepares students for learning all sorts of data.
Here is some of what students learn in Grammar School at Veritas Academy:
In Kindergarten and First Grade students learn the phonetic sounds as the basic building blocks of learning to read. They are all proficient readers by 2nd grade, but often are reading well even in Kindergarten.
They learn the basic spelling rules that govern the English language, like “i before e except after c,” and also the words called “rule-breakers” that do not obey these principles.
They learn and can identify the basic parts of speech in 1st grade.
They begin in math learning the basic facts of addition and subtraction in Kindergarten. Building on this late in 1st grade they start learning their times tables. In 2nd grade times tables are mastered and division introduced. By 6th grade they have completed Pre-Algebra and are ready to start Algebra I as they enter the Dialectic years.
Most of Grammar School History focuses on learning the major events of world history and Biblical history chronologically. In 2nd grade students study Old Testament and Egyptian history; in 3rd grade they study New Testament, Greek and Roman history; in 4th grade Medieval history is the focus; in 5th grade students learn about the explorers coming to the New World and about the American War for Independence; finally, in 6th grade student learn about modern American history.
