Life is The Comedy

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Today, the story hit the paper that Floyd Landis has come clean. He did use drugs, he says, ubiquitously. How sad! How non-Lancastrian! There are a number of troubling elements in this tale. I name only a few (in their order of decent through the Inferno): (more…)

Life is The Comedy

In a recent column by Paul Krugman in the New York Times, we can see some of the frightening outlines of the future (especially of future—(maybe not long term) fiscal policy). Here is the entire article: (more…)

Faux Capitalism

Monday, May 17th, 2010

George Will’s editorial in the Lancaster Paper today again demonstrates how far we have strayed from our capitalist moorings and how close we are to turning freedom into slavery.

We have been sold (or our representatives have been sold) the bailouts of the last two years because if we did not do it, we would see a collapse of the world economy and such dire consequences that we would all have to rename the Great Depression the Not-so-grand Depression. So to avoid these DIRE problems, we sold the future. We bought comfort for ourselves by selling our children’s freedom. This has already been done. We must now ask: What have we done? Has it produced the desired effect? Who or what did we protect by selling out our children? (more…)

Calvin Hanging Out on The Border

Recently, Arizona law makers passed a law that says that police can ask to see a person’s papers if they are suspicious of them being an illegal alien. There has been a firestorm ever since. First, I am generally an advocate of fairly open and easy immigration. If you can get a job and make money here and you will obey the law (and pay taxes), I am for you getting in and having a shot at American freedom. America is full of immigrants. Second, I will admit that I am very concerned when the government makes judgment calls. I worry about the abuse of power and could see bad things coming from a law like this—were it abused. I generally think that the police (in general) do the best job of making discretionary decisions (Shall I compare thee to Congress?), but I could see how an overzealous policeman could stir up trouble with this law. So, for the record, so far I have real ambivalent feelings about this law. (more…)

The Issue

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

At present, THE issue of our day politically has been or is being crystallized in places like Greece. THE question we face is whether we will reduce the promises and entitlement that we presently have or whether we will cling to our entitlements and be content to incessantly steal from each other. The choices are clear—embrace reality or cling to the fantasy. If we do not change our ways and even come to terms with the fact that we have made promises that we obviously cannot keep, we will perish as a free people (maybe we already have). This is not a prophetic utterance—any simple glance at a rudimentary spreadsheet will confirm the fact that we have embraced a view of life that is fantasy. The silver lining has now worn off the clouds.

Something You Should Get

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

If you do not get the Mars Hill Audio Journal, I would highly recommend that you do. There is no better inexpensive way to have the best Christian books listed for you. Ken Myers of Mars Hill does an almost inestimable service sifting through so many books, picking the best and most pertinent, interview the authors (brilliantly), and helping listeners understand the issues of the day. I am blessed by it every quarter. (more…)
